If you are considering having a swimming pool built, you might be wondering how much room you need, both for the pool itself and the area around it. To help your planning, here’s a guide to how much room you are likely to need.

Before checking our sizing guide, you might be interested to know the most popular pool sizes we build are. For outdoor pools, 50% of the pools we build for residential properties are 30ft x 15ft (9.2m x 4.5m). Another 45% are various sizes between 30ft and 36ft in length, with the remaining 5% being larger or smaller sizes as required.

For indoor pools, about 90% are 30ft x 15ft (9.2m x 4.5m), with the majority of the other 10% slightly shorter at 28ft x 14ft (8.6m x 4.3m).

Pool size guide

In addition to the actual size of the pool and surround itself, when planning a pool build, one of the key things to consider is access for the machinery (such as a digger) that will be required. The sizing tables below assume that access is not a problem. If you think access could be tricky, we would be more than happy to arrange a site visit to give you advice.

In the sizing tables below, the “minimum footprint” size is pretty tight (though don’t be put off if you have less space than the minimum as we have built plenty of pools that break the rules!), whilst the “comfortable footprint” size would allow for proper paving all the way round the pool and for the layout not to look or feel cramped. All sizes given are in feet.
