AOP is the Advanced Oxidation Process. When germicidal UV light and ozone react the result is the production of hydroxyl radicals. This reaction is known as Advanced Oxidation Process, or AOP. Hydroxyl radicals are powerful oxidation agents, quickly destroying bacteria, viruses, pathogens and other contaminants that occur in the water. Hydroxyl radicals also help destroy certain chlorine resistant micro-organisms giving you cleaner water in your spa / swimming pool.
In AOP systems, the unstable hydroxyl radicals react with dissolved waterborne contaminants in a series of strong oxidation reactions. This process happens almost instantaneously.
AOP systems also destroy and prevent chloramines—formed when chlorine reacts with sweat or urine—that cause unpleasant smells, eye, and skin irritations which increases water clarity.
Using an AOP system generally reduces the overall amount of chlorine or other sanitiser used.
